How we use AI

AI does the paperwork. People do the caring. Here is exactly where we use it, where we never will, and how to say no.

Where things stand

Today, no AI tool touches anyone’s information at Still Standing. We are publishing these rules before we turn anything on, so they are the standard we are held to, not a description written afterward.

People first

You will always be talking to a person: a credentialed peer recovery coach who has been through recovery. A person reads every message you send us, and a person sends every message you get.

What AI does

Behind the coach, never in front of you.

Moves urgent messages up
A fixed list of words and a second check can move a message that sounds like danger up a coach’s list. They never decide how serious it is or what happens next. A person does.
Summarizes for the coach
Before a call, a short recap of what you’ve already told your coach, so you don’t have to repeat yourself.
Looks things up
Which plans and programs cover what, and which options fit a work schedule. The coach checks it.
Drafts for the coach
A first draft of a message or a reminder. Your coach reads it, changes it as they like, and sends it, or doesn’t.

What AI never does

Never talks to you
No chatbot. Nothing you type goes to an AI that answers you. Every message you get is from a person, and a person reads every message you send.
Never writes crisis text
The words about 988 and 911 are fixed. A person wrote them once and nothing rewrites them.
Never decides
Not how serious things are, what kind of care you need, whether you need medication, or who gets a coach.
Never sends anything alone
Nothing it drafts reaches you until your coach presses send.
Never learns from you
We do not use your information to train any AI model, ours or anyone else’s. We do not sell it or share it with advertisers.
Never plays a coach
Nothing here is named or presented as a coach, a counselor or a person.

Where your information lives

Your information is stored in a protected Amazon Web Services account in the United States. Today that account is run by Global Recovery & Wellness, a company our founders also operate, which provides our website and systems to us at no charge. Still Standing’s records are kept apart from that company’s own records. If we move to an account that Still Standing owns outright, we will say so here.

If we use an AI tool, it will run through Amazon’s AI service under our written agreement with Amazon, and read only what the task needs. We don’t put your information in a consumer chat app or paste it into any outside tool, and we don’t let a vendor’s note-taking bot join your calls.

How long we keep things, and who can see them, is on our privacy page.

If you’re in danger

Our rules for a message that sounds like danger are published too, in plain words: our crisis protocol. We are not watching messages around the clock. Call or text 988, or call 911.

How to opt out

Tell your coach at any time, in any words, that you don’t want AI used with your information. Or write to hello@stillstandingrecovery.org. We switch it off for your record, tell you when it’s done, and everything else about your coaching stays the same.

Who is accountable

The board of directors of Still Standing Recovery. Our coaches’ supervisor reviews how AI is used every month. Once we have a year of use, we will publish a yearly report: how fast urgent messages reached a person, crisis referrals, what we checked for missed urgent messages, how often coaches changed a draft, and how each version of a tool tested before we used it. Questions go to hello@stillstandingrecovery.org.
